About this Event
Hedge laying is an ancient craft, yet essential to modern day hedgerow maintenance. Learn how to lay a hedge back into good health so that you can have a go on your own hedge or encourage someone local to you to adapt their management. We have lost half of all our hedgerows in the last 70 years, over 500,000km of hedgerow (enough to go beyond the moon). Now, of those we have left, half are in unfavourable condition due to lack of or poor management.

2-day course: aimed at anyone with an interest in gaining the skills to improve their local hedgerows.
Time: 10am - 4pm, both days
If the cost is prohibitive, please email [email protected]
Please bring: · Packed lunches and water. · Baseball caps to protect heads from thorns · Long sleeve and sturdy trousers (the hedge is entirely hawthorn/blackthorn). If you have your own tools then I would encourage you to bring them as we may be a little tight (loppers, folding saws, billhooks, axe) gloves, glasses – and there will be a selection of tools provided also.

With 72% of the UK as farmland, hedgerows are the lifeline to so much of our native wildlife, making do in this agriculturally dominated landscape. Hedgerows are also incredibly important for people, farmers, climate change and the environment. The Hampshire Hedge Project
This event is part of the wider Hampshire Hedge project, connecting up the New Forest and the South Downs National Parks with green corridor of hedgerows and wild spaces. Over a 3-year period (starting Autumn 2023) CPRE Hampshire will restore a network of 12 – 14 miles of hedgerows working with local communities, schools, landowners and farmers to manage existing hedgerows and plant new ones, connecting copses and meadows along the way.
