Tracing urban ancestors can be a challenging task, especially during the 19th and 20th centuries. Frequent moves and the rapid expansion of cities, fueled by both overseas immigrants and rural migrants seeking employment, complicate the process. Maps are invaluable tools in this endeavor—not only for locating city addresses but also for uncovering details about the neighborhoods where our ancestors lived, worked, worshipped, attended school, shopped, and spent their leisure time.

Among the many map resources available, fire insurance maps stand out for their rich detail and historical value. This presentation demonstrates how these maps can reveal insights about individual properties, neighborhoods, and the broader transition of America from a predominantly rural society to an urban one by the end of World War I.

The event will take place via Zoom. If you join, please sign in early to make sure you are able to see the program.
