About this Event
Hard steel is perfect for chisels, punches, knives, and parts subject to wear, but you can't thread it, bend it, or do many other manufacturing tasks. So you work steel while it is fairly soft, and then harden it for the job it's going to do.
Hardening large objects is a complex process, but hardening small tools, such as chisels, knives, and punches, is fairly easy and straightforward.
In this class, students will observe a tool being heated, quenched in oil, then polished and annealed. Students will then have the opportunity to harden and temper their own project piece.
After completing this class, students who are MakeIt Lab members will be authorized to do small-project hardening in the Soft Metal Shop.
