About this Event
Heartstrings is a hands-on workshop where students will dive into the art of mending, darning, and patching. Students are encouraged to bring two or more items of clothing that need mending, as well as any yarn and embroidery supplies they would like to bring! This is mainly a class for beginners with little to no sewing experience as well as intermediate sewists.
In this workshop, participants will explore darning not only as a practical skill but also as a form of resistance and self-expression. Mending clothes as an art form is an act of care and love. In a world where mass production and planned obsolescence dominate, mending stands as an act of defiance, reclaiming the value of craftsmanship and sustainability. By learning how to repair garments rather than discarding them, individuals can actively combat cycles of overconsumption and waste.
Moreover, darning offers a platform for personal expression and storytelling. Each darn, patch, and stitch becomes a mark of the wearer's life. A rip in a pair of jeans reflects the life lived by the wearer, the way they move through the world, and the work they put into their lives. How sweet! How full of love we can make things!
This class is taught by Alchemy artist-in-resdience Coco is a multi-disciplinary artist visiting us from San Francisco. Our class offerings taught by artists-in-residence are developed by the visiting artists and are informed by their artistic practice.
This class is held in the print studio on the AAC campus. Directions and parking information will be included in your confirmation email.
Registration: Please register early if you are able, as it helps us to assure that classes meet their minimums in order to run! If you register more than three weeks before this class begins, a 20% early bird discount will automatically be applied to your ticket at checkout.

Sustaining tickets help us continue to invest in programming. Full price tickets cover the costs associated with running classes. Accessibility tickets are priced below what it costs for us to run a class. If the cost of a full price ticket is a hardship, we encourage you to purchase a sliding scale ticket. If you can pay the full price or sustaining price, please choose that option so we can keep providing arts programming to the community.
