Propeller Art Gallery presents the Heart Mind Love group exhibition featuring 98 artworks by 80 artists.
We are told that when Aleut/Innu Elders speak of the heart they do not necessarily mean feelings but a deep portal of profound interconnectedness and awareness that exists between humans and all living things.
Historically Western cultures have regarded the heart and mind as distinct as emotion and reason acknowledging the pull between the two.
In many Eastern cultures the heart and mind are seen to work together as heart-mind which is an important source of compassion and wisdom. It is the place both of suffering and confusion but also of ‘awakening’.
Words for “Heart” have Indo-European roots. The Sanskrit Hridaya has aural resonance with “heorte” (Old English) and “heart” in modern English. “Kardia” from Greek gives us “cardio”. “Cor” the Latin for heart “core” “coeur” in French and the Spanish “corazon”.
In scientific terms the heart is a pump responsible for beating every second and oxygenating our organs. The mind is a complex network of millions of neural circuits that regulate all body functions. Together heart and mind control the feelings and emotions associated with love by mechanisms that remain enigmatic.
Today the heart’s symbolism thrives in Valentine’s Day celebrations heart icons and emojis casually shared from devices every moment.
