About this Event

In an effort to shape our community's narrative, Heart + Craft offers an opportunity for locals to engage with Democratic National Convention attendees. This non-partisan event will feature a variety of activities, including hard hat tours of Inspiration Kitchens, SkyART, Firebird, and Revolution Workshop. There will be a community meal with a welcome address by Lake Street Collaborative, and performances by BandWith, Intonation, and Collective Learning Lab. The event will also include the unveiling of a SkyART West mural, art-making demos by Firebird, SkyART, and Inspiration Kitchens, and a panel/town hall discussion. Care-Station Estheticians will provide services, and DJ Duane Powell will perform, showcasing the rich culture and abundant resources of Chicago's arts scene.

The Heart & Craft Corridor (H&CC) on Lake Street is an ecosystem of nonprofit organizations dedicated to deep connection and service to the East Garfield Park community, the larger West Side and city. The transit-oriented design of this corridor increases access and connection to the larger city. H&CC believes that shared resources and smooth, networked pathways and opportunities for people amplify our impacts by replacing unnecessary duplication or competition with collaboration.

It is our intention to prioritize existing community members as well as BIPOC participants in our spaces. Together, member organizations will foster smooth, trusted hand-offs between partnering organizations in addition to sharing back-end resources where possible (accounting, bookkeeping, fundraising, etc.) and sharing facilities and resources for participants. Examples include field trips to use partners’ facilities, fabricating items for each other, publicizing each others’ work and opportunities, and hiring from each others’ participants when possible.
