About this Event

Health Tech Nights is partnering with UVic's School of Health Information Science (HINF) for for a special Health Tech Afternoon: Building the Next Generation of Digital Health Professionals.

Today’s students are learning how to design, implement, and optimize modern health information systems. Tomorrow, they will lead the transformation of care delivery across Canada.


Whether you're hiring, mentoring, conducting research, or exploring your own path into digital health, this afternoon is for you.

📍 University of Victoria: Sŋéqə ʔéʔləŋ (Sngequ House), Conference Room A
The HINF co-op panel will dive into real-world experiences and projects from both the employer and student perspectives:

Employers will share how co-op students have contributed to meaningful initiatives, improved workflows, and brought fresh ideas to their organizations. Students will highlight the skills they’ve applied, and the innovative solutions they’ve helped deliver.

This event is an opportunity to:

  • Gain clear insight into how health informatics skills can strengthen modern healthcare delivery by showcasing student projects and co-op experiences.
  • Learn about way organizations can benefit from hiring UVic Health Information Science co-op students.
  • Access direct opportunities to connect with faculty for collaboration, mentorship and future engagement.

Join us and connect with fellow researchers, entrepreneurs, and professionals passionate about health technology and innovation, while learning more about what HINF students are doing in the classroom and the workplace.

Food and refreshments will be provided.

We recommend public transportation. Parking closest to the venue is in Lot 5.

A brief introduction from the Director of Health Information Science setting the stage for the future of the field.


Co-op Panel (~30 minutes)

Hear directly from employers and students about:

  • Real-world projects and implementations
  • Workflow improvements and innovation initiatives
  • Lessons from working with health data and digital tools
  • How co-op placements create meaningful impact

Student Capstone Showcase + Networking (~90 minutes)

Explore a range of research and development projects demonstrating how students are leveraging health data, technologies, and tools to advance digital health.

Then stay to connect — meet fellow innovators, researchers, professionals, and students passionate about improving healthcare through technology.


Meet the Speakers
Karen Courtney | Director, School of Health Information Science

Dr. Karen Courtney is a health informatics researcher focused on virtual care, community- based health projects and modernizing gender, sex and sexual orientation practices in digital health systems. She led the Digital Health Equity Group, former co-chair of the Sex and Gender Working Group at Canada Health Infoway and is a Fellow of the American Medical Informatics Association.

Jason Bond and Amr Farghali | Co-op Coordinators

Jason and Amr support students in preparing for the workforce and help employers connect with talented co-op students skilled in areas like project management, IT, research, workflows, training, quality assurance testing, and more.

Rachel Barker | Co-Founder & CEO, Novametra

Rachel is a senior digital transformation leader with extensive experience driving innovation in healthcare. She focuses on strategic planning, change management and human-centered adoption of emerging technologies, partnering with clinicians and industry to create practical, sustainable solutions. She is also an active contributor to BC’s digital health community.

Leslie Keenan | Executive Director, Shoreline Medical Society

Leslie is the Executive Director of Shoreline Medical, a charitable, non-profit Society that operates two primary care clinics on the Saanich Peninsula and a dedicated youth clinic. Leslie was the previous E.D. for three Divisions of Family Practice in South Island, Nanaimo and the North Shore. Previous to that she worked for Vancouver Coastal Health as the Assisted Living Manager and Chief Licensing Officer and taught at the Justice Institute of BC. She was an RN for 40 years and holds a Bachelors in Leadership for Justice and Public Safety.
