Salem Academy and College has scheduled its fourth annual Health Leadership Forum for Friday, October 18, 2024. Salem’s Health Leadership Forum will feature women in health leadership roles from across the nation and will discuss trends in health and offer attendees opportunities for networking while hearing from some of the nation’s most widely recognized experts and innovators in their fields.
The Health Leadership Forum is free and open to the public by registering at salem.edu/hlf.
Participants who attend Salem Academy and College’s Health Leadership Forum will have the opportunity to interpret and discuss a wide range of health issues associated with current practice or educational goals. In addition, they will be able to leverage education and leadership experiences to enhance growth and development of future leaders in health. By attending the conference, attendees can receive continuing education credit from Northwest AHEC.
The forum begins at 9 a.m. on October 18 with a welcome from President McGee followed by the keynote address, which is being presented as a Katherine Graham Howard A’1913, C’1917 lecture. The Katherine Graham Howard fund was established for visits to Salem College by distinguished leaders in public and international affairs. Howard served in federal agencies during the Eisenhower administration.
Charlene Wong, MD, MSHP, will deliver this year’s Katherine Graham Howard A’1913, C’1917 keynote address. Dr. Wong currently serves as senior advisor for health strategy at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Wong leads agency-wide collaborative efforts that integrate public health with healthcare, social support, and other partners. This work spans the CDC’s priority areas of supporting young families, mental health and overdose, and readiness and response.
Following the keynote address, the first morning panel begins at 9:55 a.m. and will feature a discussion called “Diverse Perspectives on Maternal and Child Health. The panel incudes Anastasia Gage, PhD, a professor at Tulane University School of Public Health (Global Maternal and Child Health) in New Orleans; Natalie Hernandez, PhD, MPH, executive director of the center for maternal health equity, Morehouse School of Medicine in Atlanta; and Esther Leerkes, PhD, Jefferson, a Pilot Excellence Professor of Human Development and Family Studies and Associate Dean of Research at the University of North Carolina Greensboro.
The second morning panel begins at 10:50 a.m. and will feature a discussion called, “Addressing Equity for Homeless Populations: National And Local Perspectives.” The panel includes Siya Hegde, JD, staff attorney for Housing Not Handcuffs, National Homelessness Law Center in Washington, D.C.; Jan Corpening Kelly A’85, executive director at Samaritan Ministries in Winston-Salem; and Keshia Pollack Porter, PhD, MPH, Bloomberg Centennial Chair, Department of Health Policy and Management at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore.
Salem’s Health Leadership Forum will include a closing leadership roundtable moderated by President McGee, which will feature a discussion called “Pathways to Success” and will include all the morning’s speakers.
The Health Leadership Forum concludes with a networking luncheon in Salem’s Corrin Refectory dining hall from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m.
