Have Yourself will be celebrating the extravagant and outrageous fabulosity of the iconic and legendary Blitz and Taboo clubs of London and re-imagining what sounds you would hear if those clubs still existed today.
From 1979 to 1986, these clubs pioneered safe spaces for all forms of queer subculture. They created an atmosphere of reinvention and transformation; embracing colour, decadence and queerness. Most of the radical fashions we know from the 80s had its roots in these clubs - from icons such as Boy George, Toyah Wilcox, Steve Strange, Pam Hogg....
Drawing upon the playful, decadent androgyny of the New-Romantic scene founded by Blitz club, Leigh Bowery's Taboo club took that into more flamboyant and extreme realms, eventually becoming the place where the rebels and outlaws became the fashion visionaries of today.
The music from this scene is a huge part of what we regularly play at Have Yourself, so we're using this as starting point to explore the sounds from this period and take that energy through all the decades.
And as it's Wigan Pride, we'll have a special focus on the queer music that we love, from that 70s/80s era right up to the present day.
