Met: Asia JokielIn this new XXL class, we will experience a classical Hatha Yoga practice through the lens of the Five Koshas — the five layers of being. This philosophical concept is an essential part of the yogic tradition. Exploring it through practice can deepen our experience and allow us to sink much deeper than usual. During the class, we will move gradually from the gross to the subtle, exploring the five layers of being to support inner balance, self-awareness, and connection — hopefully coming as close as possible to the Body of Joy, often called the bliss body.
Yogic philosophy explains that these five layers of being are not separate bodies, but sheaths that wrap around our true Self, like layers of an onion. By gently “peeling” these layers through practice, we create the conditions to connect more deeply with our inner Self.
Rather than analysing the koshas intellectually, this class invites us to notice and experience them directly.
The five koshas are commonly described as:
the physical body, the energetic body, the mental and emotional body, the intuitive body, and the bliss body — often referred to as the Body of Joy.
In yoga, joy is not understood simply as an emotion or a fleeting feeling. It is a deeply embodied state of ease and presence, something that can be sensed throughout the whole body. This kind of joy does not depend on external circumstances or excitement — it arises when effort softens, when the nervous system settles, and when we feel more at home within ourselves.
