🍂 Come up to the Capital Nov 9 for friends & fun! We will explore the Wadsworth Athenaeum, the oldest continuously open public museum in the U.S.; & Hartford’s Ancient Burying Ground across the street. It’s a family & partner friendly, gloriously trans, TEAM LISA Joint 🩵🩷🤍The Wadsworth Castle opened to the public in 1844, & still stands today. The diverse collection also boasts art history significance, including:
* Launching the Hudson River School as a legitimate art movement
* The first U.S. museum to purchase & display Piet Mondrian & Salvador Dali
* The first Picasso retrospective in the U.S. (1934)
* Comprehensive bequeathments by Elizabeth Colt (the “First Lady of Hartford”) & John Pierpont Morgan
The First Church & Ancient Burying Ground was established in 1640 for Thomas Hooker, Hartford’s founder’s, congregation. There are four Connecticut Colony governors interned, including Thomas Welles who over saw the first witch trials in the Colonies (predating the famous Salem witch trials by over 40 years). Likewise, there are markers by significant 18th century artists & stone carvers that I will highlight.
