Many yoga practices prioritize passive stretching of the hamstrings and gluteus maximus, which are key components of our “posterior chain.” Overemphasizing mobility/stretching over stability/strengthening of these large muscle groups can potentially create muscular imbalances or compensation patterns, such as relying too heavily on back muscles to maintain upright posture, when walking. In this 90-minute asana practice, we will shift the familiar mantra of “lengthening” to one of “strengthening,” by tweaking traditional postures within the scope of classic hatha practice.
This approach may be particularly helpful for regular yoga students who do not have a complementary strength or resistance-training program, or who are hypermobile.
Six months or more of regular yoga practice recommended.
