About this Event

Join Drs. Ma’n Zawati & James Tsui for a dynamic workshop on the ethics and impact of AI in scientific research.

This workshop will be presented in person in the Charles Martin Amphitheatre (Room 504) in the McIntyre Medical Building, 3655 Promenade Sir-William-Osler, Montreal, QC H3A 1A3.

We will also have in person viewing hubs in:

  • Room 101 of the Michael Smith Laboratories, The University of British Columbia
  • Room 432 Ramsay Wright Building, 25 Harbord St, University of Toronto

For those who cannot attend in person we will broadcast the workshop live over Zoom.

The workshop is free to attend with refreshments and snacks provided to those attending in person events.

Demystifying AI: A Journey Through Its History and Role in Medicine
Host: Dr. James Tsui

Info: Dr. James Tsui is a Radiation Oncologist at the MUHC, Assistant Professor in Clinical Oncology at McGill University, Director of the Clinical Trial Unit in Radiation Oncology, and a FRQS Research Scholar. He holds a Bachelor's in Electrical Engineering from Concordia (2006), a PhD in Computational Neuroscience from the Montreal Neurological Institute / McGill (2013), and an MD from McGill (2015). He completed his residency in Radiation Oncology at McGill in 2020, followed by a Brachytherapy Fellowship at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Harvard (2021), and a Professional Master’s in Artificial Intelligence (Deep Learning) at MILA / Université de Montréal (2023). His research focuses on the intersection of machine learning and medicine, aiming to integrate AI into oncology research and clinical care.

Genomics Data Sharing and Generative AI: Ethical, Legal Points to Consider
Host: Dr. Ma’n Zawati

Info: Ma’n H. Zawati (LL.B., LL.M., Ph.D. (DCL)) is an Associate Professor at McGill University's
Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences and the Research Director of the Centre of
Genomics and Policy in the Department of Human Genetics. He is also an Associate
Member in the Department of Medicine, the Department of Equity, Ethics and Policy and
the Faculty of Law. His work is interdisciplinary, drawing together perspectives from law,
ethics, genomics, and policy. His research mainly focuses on the legal, ethical and policy
dimensions of health research and clinical care, specializing in data sharing, governance,
professional liability, and the use of novel technologies (e.g., mhealth apps, WGS, WES and
Artificial Intelligence). During COVID-19, Prof. Zawati was instrumental in establishing the
ethics governance for multiple initiatives, including the Quebec COVID19 Biobank
(BQC19), CGEn’s HostSeq project and the COVID-19 Immunity Task Force.

Info: Sabrina Gregoire is a 3rd-year PhD candidate at the University of Ottawa in the Couture Lab, where she studies the biochemical and structural features of a histone methyltransferase complex. She also serves as Co-Chair of the CEEHRC Trainee Committee, where she leads the podcast subcommittee.
