About this Event
Extinction Rebellion Haringey is organising a Community Assembly with support from Haringey Community Action Network to coincide with COP28. This event is open and accessible to all residents.
Our Community Assembly will deliberate over how we can build a thriving and sustainable future for Haringey as we are faced by multiple crises of climate, nature loss, pollution, housing, and cost of living. Its conclusions will drive future actions, contribute to solutions and influence messaging to politicians, press and public.
Why are we doing this? Because current political systems are failing us. Local government needs to adapt more rapidly so it can protect us from these imminent, existential threats. Waiting for top-down democratic change is not enough to get the society that works for the majority. We need to proactively build the system we want to see, a system based on grassroots, community-level democracy: a politics for and by the people. But to do this, we need to create spaces in which we can share ideas, listen to each other and grow together. This is where people’s assemblies come in.
First and foremost, community assemblies are democratic exercises that allow people to share thoughts and feelings, discuss problems and generate solutions in a highly structured way. The structure facilitates participation and inclusion, and gives people a voice – everyone is listened to and everybody listens. Community Assemblies work to build trust, community and connection, whilst facilitating participatory and deliberative democracy.
