About this Event

Harakiri! Challenging the colonial collector mindset through acting and performance.

“If you want to go fast, go alone, if you want to go far, go together”. - African Proverb

Join us for a workshop designed to encourage imaginative and interactive interpretations of the objects cared for by the University of Birmingham’s Research and Cultural Collections (RCC) through acting and performance. Harakiri is the third of four workshops part of the Africanize project, a collaboration between We Don’t Settle and the University of Birmingham Research & Cultural Collections department.

This project is a forward-looking initiative aimed at challenging the colonial-collector mindset by encouraging discussions around collected objects and art. Our approach centres on fostering creative, engaging interpretations of the collection while providing space for meaningful dialogues through workshops based on research.

The workshop merges traditional and contemporary acting techniques to facilitate dynamic exchanges of ideas and experiences. Through engaging exercises and scene work, participants will explore the stories behind the objects, breathing new life into their narratives.

Expect vibrant discussions, energizing acting sessions, and opportunities to connect with like-minded individuals passionate about storytelling and African heritage. Come away with a deeper appreciation for the power of performance in preserving cultural traditions and shaping our understanding of history.

What to expect in the session:

  • Engage in vibrant discussions exploring the cultural significance of the movements and their connection to historical artefacts.
  • Embark on energetic acting sessions guided by the projects Artist in Residence Sipho Eric Ndlovu, igniting creativity and individual expression.
  • Discover fresh viewpoints and cultivate bonds with like-minded participants devoted to exploring the rich heritage of Africa.
  • Refreshments.

In our workshops, inclusivity is at the heart of everything we do. Regardless of your background, experience, or skill level, our space is open and welcoming to all. We believe that everyone has something unique to contribute and that diversity enriches our collective experience. Whether you’re a seasoned actor or stepping onto the stage for the first time, you’ll find a supportive community ready to embrace you and celebrate your journey with open arms.

Let’s explore history and narratives through acting. See you there!
