About this Event
In a time when the world can feel a bit too much, art is a tool for navigating all this inquietude while bringing something new back into the world. Collaging at its core is about recontextualizing ideas, paving the way for new meanings, new solutions, new perspectives, and maybe our world needs just that kind of reimagining. That's what collage pioneer Hannah Höch (1889–1978), the inspiration for this workshop, did during the interwar era, when so many social and ethical challenges arose. Through her work, she explored how collage could express ideas, wishes, and stances: art as critique.
In this workshop, participants will enter Höch's world of photomontage, working with paper, scissors, x-acto knives (not kitchen knives like Höch famously used), glue, and a selection of images and fragments from magazines and books. Through experimentation they will cut, tear, layer, and reassemble these materials into their own collages, becoming part of the ongoing artistic conversation that spans generations.
About Beatriz:
Beatriz Geada (b. 1997, Portugal) graduated in Sound and Image from the Superior School of Arts and Design, Caldas da Rainha, in 2020. Working across photography, video, animation, and collage, her practice also extends to curatorial work through film clubs (Curtas na Cesta) and festivals she has organized and contributed to, spaces she believes can mirror the world and be crucial for collective reflection and exchange.
Beatriz started making collages during the pandemic and hasn't stopped since. The medium tapped into something she first discovered through editing at university: an intuitive, associative way of thinking that finds coherence in fragmentation and meaning in unexpected juxtaposition. It also reconnected her with the playful freedom and curiosity of her inner child while helping her stay present. Her collages shift between playfulness and political commentary, exploring themes of identity, the body, and contemporary realities through surreal and dreamy feelings. She lives and works in Lisbon.
Collage Working Club (CWC) is a weekly open workspace for artists working in the medium of paper. Organised in the format of alternate ‘drop in’ sessions and workshops masterclasses, it has both a regular facilitator, whilst also involving the artist community in the sharing of knowledge and skills. Providing materials, education and connections is the primary aim of CWC, and it will do this through the interdisciplinary art of collage as both an art form and a tool for personal growth.
