Tickets: £12CALLING ALL CONDEMNED!
Join dark historian Andrew Johnston of Alternative Ulstours for an illustrated talk on capital punishment in Belfast, from Henry Joy McCracken to Robert McGladdery.
Andrew will begin in the Georgian era, when the infamous 'Bloody Code' listed more than 200 capital offences. Public executions took place in Belfast town centre until 1816, with 'Gallows Day' attracting large crowds.
Between 1854 and 1961, 17 men were 'hanged by the neck until they were dead' at HM Prison Belfast, on the Crumlin Road. The talk will detail the doomed souls, the executioners and the crimes that warranted a death sentence.
Andrew will also reveal some surprising facts about capital punishment in the UK and wonder if it may yet make a grim return.
So, come along to the iconic Sunflower Public House, buy a drink, pull up a seat and stare into the abyss with Alternative Ulstours!
