About this Event

Hands-On STEM Workshop: Gummy Bear Osmosis Lab

Hosted by N.E. LOVE EMPOWER

Get ready to explore real biology in the sweetest way possible! In this fun, in‑person STEM workshop, students will investigate osmosis using colorful gummy bears that grow, shrink, and transform as water moves in and out of them.

This highly interactive lab makes abstract life‑science concepts easy to see, measure, and understand. Perfect for curious minds who love hands‑on science and creative experimentation. Don’t miss this exciting, squishy science adventure!

🔬 What Participants Will Learn
  • Osmosis Basics - Understand how water moves across semi‑permeable membranes.
  • Solute Concentration- Explore how salt, sugar, and water affect cell‑like structures.
  • Modeling Cells- Use gummy bears as stand‑ins for real cells to visualize water movement.
  • Homeostasis- Learn how living things maintain balance by regulating water flow.
  • Scientific Measurement- Practice measuring length, width, and height to track changes over time.

🍬 Participants Will:
  • Conduct a full gummy bear osmosis experiment using water, salt water, and sugar solutions
  • Measure and record changes in gummy bear size to model water movement
  • Make predictions and analyze results using real scientific reasoning
  • Complete The Rescue Challenge- shrink an over‑swollen gummy bear using a high‑sugar solution
  • Take home a deeper understanding of how cells move water to stay alive

📚 NGSS Alignment

This workshop aligns with the following Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS):

MS‑LS1‑1:
Develop and use a model to describe how water moves into and out of cells through osmosis, supporting the structure and function of living organisms.
