Join us for a hands-on, immersive California native plant program.
About this Event

This program is designed for beginners, aspiring Master Gardeners, restoration practitioners, and anyone interested in native plant propagation and ecological gardening.

Participants will gain extensive hands-on practice with seeds, cuttings, divisions, and native garden installation. You will enhance practical skills while learning the ecological importance of California native plants and how to successfully grow and care for them in gardens and restoration settings.


What You’ll Learn

Throughout this program, participants will explore:

  • Introduction to California native plants and local species identification
  • Seed collection, cleaning, storage, and treatments for breaking dormancy
  • Propagation by seed, cuttings, and divisions
  • Potting up, soil mixes, and container selection
  • Planting, watering, and maintaining native plants in gardens
  • Timing propagation for the desired plant size and project goals
  • Advanced topics in native gardening, habitat restoration, and fire resilience
  • Pollinator and flower interactions
  • Ethnobotany: edible, medicinal, and cultural uses of native plants

No prior experience required.


What to Bring
  • Closed-toe shoes and weather-appropriate clothing
  • Notebook or device for notes
  • Curiosity and willingness to get your hands dirty

All plant materials and tools will be provided.

1. Park in the final, bottom, lower visitor parking lot: Car Park for Sycamore Canyon

2. Walk past the left side of the bathrooms, past the Eucalyptus grove.

3. Walk into and past the horse stable area, and into Rancho Sierra Vista Nursery.

Total walking time averages less than 3 minutes. If you are walking for longer, you may be walking the wrong way! Call or text 805-844-7449 if you are lost.

The main entrance is at Via Goleta and Lynn Road, Newbury Park, CA, 91320

From the Ventura Fwy (101) to Lynn Rd exit. South on Lynn Rd 5.25 miles to Via Goleta. Park entrance is on the left.
