At EcoMatters organic teaching garden, this hands-on composting workshop will be facilitated by Adam and organic garden co-ordinator Meg Liptrot, and offers an introduction to hot composting.Part one (Friday) will focus on gathering all the materials needed for a hot compost build, while Part two (Saturday) will concentrate on the actual building process. Don’t worry if you can only attend one session; we will cover all material in both sessions, so feel free to join either or both!
Hot-composting aims to decompose your garden waste and food scraps with minimal loss of nutrients whilst stimulating beneficial micro-organisms. When done right a hot-compost heap naturally builds up temperatures of around 60-70 degrees which will K*ll off pathogens and W**d seeds. A well-made compost boosts the health and life in your garden soil, and this helps to grow stronger and healthier plants.
What to wear: Clothes for gardening and sturdy, closed-toe shoes with grip (eg. sneakers or gumboots), gloves. Bring: a water bottle, raincoat.
Let’s get your compost cooking!
All registered workshop attendees will receive a discount voucher to use towards the composting system of your choice (Bokashi, Worm farm, or traditional compost bin). The voucher will be emailed to you after the workshop, and the composting system (and optional free rat trap) can be ordered online at compostcollective.org.nz, and delivered straight to your door.
