From the moment I touched clay I knew I would be a potter. My first teacher was renowned Māori artist Cath Brown at Christchurch Teachers College. There I learnt the basics of hand forming in clay and glaze making. Nelson’s reputation as a mecca for New Zealand potters lead me to move north in the 1990s. It was here that I was lucky enough to meet the wonderful thrower of pots Ross Richards who became my teacher and mentor for many years. This humble man taught me the value of refinement and persistence, and it is to him largely that I owe my throwing skills. In the late 1990s I attended Nelson Polytech to study ceramics, extending my boundaries in clay. Most recently in 2021 I completed a course through Otago Polytechnic in glaze theory and practice. This has enabled me to develop a range of beautiful mid-range glazes for my domestic ware.
Potting for me is about making something beautiful, to hold in one’s hand and to use to enhance the experience of everyday living. I am unashamedly committed to domestic ware and hope my work can bring pleasure to many people’s mealtimes.
