About this Event

In its 165 year history, inevitably, the Hallé has weathered many a storm & undergone essential change to survive. From the untimely deaths of Principal Conductors through world wars, economic crises & a pandemic. Our latest archive talk will draw out the human stories that underpin the Hallé’s resilience & have helped to make it the much-loved institution it is today.

There will be a particular focus on: 1895 – the sudden death of Sir Charles Hallé and the resulting creation of the Hallé Concerts Society; 1914, the outbreak of war and the impact on an organisation with German origins; the arrival of John Barbirolli in 1943. Coming to more recent times we look at the crisis of 1998 and the Covid pandemic – when the Hallé cancelled concerts for the first time in its history.
