Historic Rock Ford welcomes Justin Cherry, owner of Half Crown Bakehouse, as he demonstrates the bread of the American Revolution on Monday, September 7 (Labor Day) from 10 AM to 4 PM. Justin Cherry is a professional chef, historical baker, and the owner of Half Crown Bakehouse, a mobile operation based in Charleston, South Carolina. A lifelong living history enthusiast, Cherry combined his culinary expertise with a passion for 18th-century foodways to revive traditional baking methods using heritage and landrace grains. In 2019, his dedication to historical accuracy earned him a research fellowship at George Washington’s Mount Vernon, where he now serves as the Resident Baker. He is notably the first American to become a Freeman of the Worshipful Company of Bakers in London, one of the city's oldest livery companies. Traveling the East Coast with a custom-built, 6,000-pound mobile clay oven, Cherry educates the public by recreating period-correct breads and dishes at historic sites and reenactments. He is a Fellow of the Presidential Library of George Washington at Mount Vernon, The Society of
Cincinnati and The American Philosophical Society.
In addition to these baking demonstrations, the General Edward Hand Mansion and the John J. Snyder, Jr. Gallery will be open for self-guided tours.
