Hairy Apes BMX are coming back to the confines of the Indoor Stage at The Broadside! They will bring their unique mix of rock, jazz, Latin, Afro-funk, hip-hop, and punk to the hairiest of levels. This will be a late show starting at 11pm!Hairy Apes BMX is an Austin, Texas–based band playing an eclectic mix of rock, jazz, Latin, Afro-funk, hip-hop, and punk. HABMX arose from the ashes of Texas funk-punk legends Billy Goat. The band’s sound centered around Billy Goat frontman Mike Dillon’s growing interest in the vibraphone. They played their first gig at the Flamingo Cantina in April 1998. Rounding out the lineup were Zac Baird and JJ Jungle, who had both played in Billy Goat. The drum chair was filled by John Speice.
They became a late-night regular at festivals and packed venues such as The Mercury in Austin and Davey’s Uptown in Kansas City. The band also opened for Karl Denson’s Tiny Universe, Fishbone, Two Skinny Js, and the Sun Ra Arkestra.
All the members of Hairy Apes BMX have had busy music careers, playing with Les Claypool, Grupo Fantasma, Brownout, Korn, Critters Buggin,Everlast, The Coup, Dean Ween, Angelo Moore, Ani DiFranco, and Rickie Lee Jones.
