WRITERS CAFÉ ATOP A HILL
WITH WIDELY PUBLISHED AND AWARD WINNING MAEVE O’SULLIVAN
About this Event
Haiku is the shortest and one of the oldest poetry forms worldwide, having originated in Japan in the 17th Century. In this introductory workshop, you will get a short history of haiku, with examples, and learn some key techniques for writing and editing traditional nature haiku. We will go on a ginko (composition stroll) as part of the workshop, on which you will be encouraged to find inspiration in the sights, sounds and smells of the late autumn / early winter season.
The workshop will be led by acclaimed poet and educator Maeve O'Sullivan. Maeve’s poetry and haikai (haiku and related forms) have been widely published, anthologised, awarded and translated. She is the author of five collections of long and short-form poetry from Alba Publishing, with a sixth, Where All Ladders Start, forthcoming in November 2024. Maeve is a professional member of the Irish Writers’ Centre (IWC) and a long-term member of the British Haiku Society. She has delivered haikai workshops for Poetry Ireland, the IWC, Dublin City Libraries and various literary festivals over the last twenty-five years.
No experience of either poetry or haiku is needed for this workshop. Only haiku written during the workshop will be discussed and all workshop notes & resources will be emailed out afterwards.
Just bring a pen and paper, and wear ‘sensible’ shoes and a raincoat - just in case!
