This intriguing and beautiful folk opera delivers a deeply resonant and defiantly hopeful theatrical experience. Following two intertwining love stories — that of young dreamers Orpheus and Eurydice, and that of immortal King Hades and Lady Persephone. Hadestown invites audiences on a hell-raising journey to the underworld and back. Inspired by traditions of classic American folk music and vintage New Orleans jazz, Mitchell’s beguiling sung-through musical pits industry against nature, doubt against faith, and fear against love.“A ‘Teen Edition’ title, does not an easy show make,” says co-director, Toph Ortiz. “If you’re unfamiliar, Hadestown is a folk opera which means the entire show is set to music- a difficult and exciting task! This ‘Teen Edition’ is exactly the same, with very minor lyric adjustments to better serve the youth actors. We are also proud to have our cast performing alongside a live band- featuring talents from across the Central Valley- which is an integral component to this piece.” Hadestown: Teen Edition will be Toph Ortiz and Claudio Laso’s first SACTeen production but are very familiar with the directing seat. This production marks their third collaboration at SAC, co-directing past productions of Ride the Cyclone and Alice by Heart. “Working with this cast of teenagers has been inspiring. They’ve been focused and hardworking this entire process. They understand the weight of this story, the impact it can have on people. ” adds co-director Claudio Laso. “We’re all working hard to make this show something of our own. Something that each one of us is proud of.”
