About this Event
Grant Green was an underdog of jazz guitar. He might not have been an underdog to fellow jazz musicians…Stanley Turrentine, Hank Mobley, Larry Young, and (repeatedly) Elvin Jones featured him on their recordings.
Due to being overshadowed in his peak years by Wes Montgomery and later by George Benson, and with many of his recordings unissued until years after his death, knowing about Grant Green is a bit like knowing the hip secret handshake. We’ll give you that chance on June 9th at the Coffee Underground!
And you will hear variety! Because Grant was a master at playing hard bop, soul, funk, and R&B…all with a distinctive bluesiness, you’ll get a taste of all that...and even a little bit of latin jazz from some of his lesser known works.
This will be a special event because many of his recordings weren’t released until after his death, his tunes never became jam session or concert standards. So here in Greenville, we’re fortunate to actually hear them in live performance (unlike many other major cities)!
Grant’s band will include Shannon Hoover, Keith Davis, Tim Blackwell, and on a couple pieces Jeff Holland playing latin percussion.
They’ll perform in our venue, the Coffee Underground Theater, which is an intimate listening room which also serves homemade desserts, delicious coffee from beans roasted on premises, and an assortment of teas, wine, and cocktails. Tickets for many of our Jazz Underground series have been selling out recently, so you will want to not wait...and to buy your tickets now!
