Co-organisée par Le Lieu, centre en art actuel et l’Université Laval, l’école d’été en art performance propose une immersion de 6 semaines mêlant ateliers, accompagnement et recherche en studio.

BIOGRAPHIE
- Artiste en performance et anthropologue social (CDMX, 1973).
- Formé en anthropologie sociale à l’École nationale d’anthropologie et d’histoire.
Gustavo Alvarez débute en art performance en 2005 et cumule plus de 15 ans d’expérience. Son travail artistique porte sur des enjeux liés au tissu social tels que la violence, le rituel et les pratiques décoloniales à partir du corps, ainsi que sur l’art performance comme pratique d’archéologie de soi. Il présente son travail dans différents pays, notamment en France, en Italie, au Canada, en Colombie, en Suède, à Taïwan, au Chili, en Norvège et au Pérou. Il participe à des événements importants dans son pays, tels que la Première Exposition nationale de performance.
Il s’intéresse au commissariat d’exposition dans une perspective de création d’expériences esthétiques significatives pour les artistes participant·e·s, et a assuré le commissariat de festivals de performance importants tels que Encuentro Internacional Performancear o Morir (Sierra Tarahumara), Festival de Performance InSitu Chihuahua et InSitu Guanajuato.
Il s’intéresse également à la pédagogie de la performance, en animant des laboratoires dans divers contextes académiques, notamment à l’Institut de l'image en France, à l’Université de Guanajuato, à ExTeresa Arte Actual, à l’Université de Coahuila, à l’Université du Yucatán et au Museo de Arte Moderno de Mazatlán, entre autres.
En 2022, il a reçu le Stimulus of Creator with Trajectory (PECDA Guanajuato), dans la catégorie théâtre, pour le projet « Práticas decoloniales desde el cuerpo contra la violencia ». En 2019, il a reçu le Stimulus of Creator with Trajectory (PECDA Guanajuato), dans la catégorie interdisciplinaire, pour le projet « Renewing Actions ». En 2013, il a reçu le Stimulus of Creator with Trajectory (PECDA Chihuahua), dans la catégorie nouveaux médias, pour le projet « Acciones Performativas ».
DÉMARCHE
Alvarez joue avec le silence brisé, utilisant le générateur de performance comme un espace rituel (un espace liminal) où les situations sont confrontées au moment même où elles émergent, en encourageant toujours les participant·e·s à s’engager directement dans l’action et en proposant une création conjointe. Dans l’atmosphère environnante, créée avec le consentement des personnes impliquées, il parvient à créer ce que Hakim Bey désigne comme des zones autonomes temporaires, où les règles conventionnelles d’échange et d’étiquette sont, à tout le moins, remises en question, sinon complètement abolies.
Ses actions sont conçues pour se déployer et, à leur terme, accomplir une forme de rite de passage, tant pour le moment présent que pour le performeur lui-même.
Il apprécie interagir avec des personnes dans des espaces publics, y compris ceux situés à l’intérieur des galeries et même des musées, mais il privilégie la rencontre de spectateur·rice·s inattendu·e·s ou de « publics accidentels ». Dans chacune de ses actions, il laisse des traces (objets symboliques) qui deviennent des installations de type autel.
Alvarez est un performeur public particulièrement efficace, qui joue avec habileté des frontières entre le privé et le public — des tensions entre ce qui devrait rester intime et ce qu’il est possible d’exprimer dans l’espace public.

BIOGRAPHY

Gustavo Alvarez started in performance art in 2005 and has more than 15 years of experience. His artistic work focuses on topics related to the social fabric such as violence, ritual, and decolonial practices from the body, and performance art as a practice of the archaeology of the self. He has presented his work in different countries such as France, Italy, Canada, Colombia, Sweden, Taiwan, Chile, Norway, and Peru. He has participated in important events in the country such as the First National Performance Exhibition.
He is interested in curating from the perspective of creating meaningful aesthetic experiences for participating artists, and has curated important performance festivals such as Encuentro Internacional Performancear o Morir (Sierra Tarahumara), Festival de Performance InSitu Chihuahua, and InSitu Guanajuato.
He is also interested in the pedagogy of performance, teaching laboratories in multiple academic spaces such as the Institute of the Image in France, the University of Guanajuato, ExTeresa Arte Actual, the Universidad de Coahuila, the Universidad de Yucatán, and the Museo de Arte Moderno de Mazatlán, among others.

STATEMENT
Alvarez plays with broken silence, using the performance generator as a ritual space (a liminal space) where situations are confronted as they are generated, always encouraging participants to engage directly in the action and proposing a joint creation. Within the surrounding atmosphere, created with the permission of those involved, he succeeds in creating what Hakim Bey refers to as Temporary Autonomous Zones, in which conventional rules of exchange and etiquette are at least problematized, if not completely abolished.
His actions are intended to unfold and, by the end, complete a kind of rite of passage for both the present moment and the performer himself.
He enjoys interacting with people in public spaces, including those within galleries and even museums, but he prefers encountering unexpected spectators or “accidental audiences.” In each of his actions, he leaves remnants (symbolic objects) that become altar-like installations.
Alvarez is a highly effective public performer, one who skillfully plays with the boundaries between what is private and what is public—tensions between what should remain private and what is perfectly appropriate to express in the public realm.
