We started up this outdoor guitar pull / song circle the year that COVID came to town and we liked it so much, we kept on doing it! We gather together outdoors with acoustic instruments in hand and celebrate music on the grassy area opposite the lower observation deck at Mill Mountain (see picture above). Originals or covers are fine. We have a range of people from touring pro’s to people who’ve never set foot on a stage, but like to play and sing. Everyone is welcome. We generally start around 6:30 PM and play until dark or beyond (with lanterns and flashlights). You DON'T have to play or sing to attend - we love an audience!!Park in the lower parking lot (close to the lower deck) and bring your best songs, a folding chair, cool refreshing beverage to whet your whistle and bug spray. Enjoy the cool breeze from high atop the city. If the weather is bad (within reason), we’ll try to use the Discovery Center (1st option) or the picnic shelter located behind the Star, just off the path. If the weather is really bad (thunder and lighting or high winds), we’ll go to 3rd Street Coffeehouse instead. Watch our Facebook page for location changes.
Now in our 38th year, 3rd Street Coffeehouse is a non-profit listening room run by volunteers and never has a cover charge. We ask that you support the Coffeehouse by contributing a couple dollars to the tip bucket if you can. If you can’t, come anyway - no guilt trips! This will greatly help us continue to support the music. We thank you in advance!
Our thanks to the City of Roanoke and Gretch Boeren at the Discovery Center for allowing and encouaging such behavior!
