In 1891, The French artist Paul Gauguin (1848-1903) travelled to Tahiti in the South Pacific. The special exhibition, Paul Gauguin – Why Are You Angry? sheds light on how Gauguin was seduced by the very same south sea myth that his works still perpetuate today. The exhibition therefore also looks at 21st-century contemporary art and the present-day voices that talk about not only the effect of Gauguin’s work, but also who they affect. The guided tour introduces the ideas behind the exhibition and presents works by Gauguin and by contemporary artists illuminating how Gauguin’s Tahitian images may kindle reflection on our own age in the light of history.
