The Walters Art Museum offers in-person school tours in the galleries, with opportunities for either docent-led or self-guided experiences. Please complete this registration form to reserve a docent-led tour for your school group.
Guided tours are 75 minutes long and are offered on Wednesdays and Fridays at 10:00 a.m. Tours require a minimum of ten students with a maximum of 80 students on Wednesdays and 40 students on Fridays. One chaperone per group of ten students is required.
Discover Our In-person Tour Themes
- Ancient Cultures: (Recommended for grades 2-12) Examine artifacts that reflect the art, mythologies, culture, and daily life from around the world. This tour may include objects from our Ancient World galleries, which feature Egypt, Greece, Rome, and the Near East, as well as , and . Students will partake in an in-depth exploration of ancient cultures, as well as discuss the roles of ancient and contemporary community members such as leaders, teachers, protectors, and families.
- Telling Stories in Art: (Recommended for grades K-12) Use visual clues to decode and interpret stories and themes expressed in works of art, as well as analyze narrative elements including setting, character, and plot.
- Animals in Art: (Recommended for grades PreK-3) Explore the different ways that artists depicted real and imaginary animals and habitats in paintings and sculptures throughout the centuries. Discuss use of the elements of art—lines, shapes, colors, and textures—in this exploration.
Tours are FREE. A voluntary contribution of $7 per student will help us sustain educational programs for our communities. The Walters is pleased to offer a limited number of bus stipends for Title I schools throughout the state of Maryland, through the form of reimbursements for partial or full bus expenses.
