Explore, discover, and learn about wildlife and land conservation at Myakka Headwaters Preserve.Join us for a naturalist-guided tour of Big Waters' Myakka Headwaters Preserve . Along the way, participants will learn about the plants and animals that call this place home and the importance of protecting natural areas along the Myakka River to benefit people and nature. This unique property, only open to the public during special events and guided tours, is situated at the source of the Myakka River, where seven creeks converge. The Preserve’s floodplain forests contain tupelo, pop ash, and red maple trees, and support threatened orchids and air plants.
This program is suitable for all ages. Participants under 16 must attend with a parent or guardian.
Participants should bring a water bottle and wear comfortable clothing for walking outdoors. We recommend sun protection, bug spray, and closed-toe shoes that strap or tie to your feet, no flip-flops. Depending on rainfall patterns, some of the trails may be flooded. Please note there are no restrooms or water fountains available on site. The nearest restroom is located at Myakka Community Park .
A $5 dollar donation per person is suggested for this program. Your gift will help us save wild places and continue to engage people in nature. We greatly appreciate your support!
