Join local mushroom expert Mike Snyder to learn about the ins and outs of outdoor mushroom cultivation and take home your very own freshly inoculated shiitake log!
This is a perfect opportunity to learn this valuable skill from a passionate mushroom expert, where you can benefit from our expertise and experience in an intimate setting. There will be plenty of opportunities for students to ask questions throughout the afternoon to make sure everyone is ready to go home and begin their own mushroom growing adventures.
Mike will share an in-depth presentation covering everything you need to know to successfully grow your own gourmet mushrooms outdoors on wood, all gleaned from the past several years of cultivating impressive amounts of mushrooms on his family’s Ozarks homestead. The talk will use original photography of his growing experiences to cover all the basics of outdoor cultivation on a solid wood substrate. Some of the topics covered will include:
· Details about where to set up your mushroom growing area
· What types of wood tend to work best for which species
· How to select which trees to cut and when to cut them
· In-depth discussion of both the drill-and-fill and totem stacking methods of log inoculation
· Information about how to grow multiple wood-loving species, including shiitake, lion’s mane and oyster mushrooms
· How to manage your logs after inoculation to improve your chances of success
· Details about when and how to harvest your mushrooms
· How to store, prepare and preserve your harvest
After the presentation, we’ll head outside for the hands-on portion of the class. Mike will demonstrate how to assemble a mushroom totem while sharing a few tips and tricks to making the process more likely to be successful. Then participants will get to perform each step of drilling and inoculating logs with shiitake mushrooms and take a log home, gaining hands-on experience using the tools and supplies that help ensure success in your own cultivation endeavors. If properly cared for, the logs will produce mushrooms the following fall and will continue to produce for up to five more years!
Tickets are for one person and are non-refundable. The number of attendees is very limited to keep the group small and provide the best learning experience possible. Our events tend to sell out, so if you want to come and learn with us don’t hesitate to sign up!
