Explore Phoebe Point Trail and learn how to forage with our Kitchen Gardener, Abbie Lehman. This class will begin by discussing foraging basics at the base of the trail. Then, we will embark on a moderate 1.1 mile loop through Phoebe Point to put our new knowledge to the test, identifying common summer wild edibles along the way.
We will discuss Wright’s connection to the Driftless, and how it inspired a culture at Taliesin of working with and learning within the natural environment.
By the end of this course, you will learn why you should forage, where you can forage, how to forage safely and responsibly, as well as key identification techniques and common plant families.
Phoebe Point Trail is part of an ongoing effort by the Driftless Area Land Conservancy to establish a 100-mile-long Driftless Trail. Your feet will be making history!
This event is open to all skill and knowledge levels! We welcome participants of ALL abilities, including those who may not be able to undertake the 1.1 mile hike. Discussion during the first hour will cover all core topics, as well as many of the wild edibles we expect to see along the path.
If we do not have seven participants signed up one week prior to the class, we reserve the right to cancel.
Please note: Foraging on Phoebe Point Trail, without express permission from the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation, is prohibited. We ask that participants follow our guides' instructions to ensure minimal impact on the environment.

About the Instructor
Abbie Gale Lehman grew up on a small farm in the Driftless and has been an avid gardener and forager for years. After earning her degree in Geography/Environmental Science from UW-Platteville, her appreciation for the Driftless only grew. “We are situated in such a unique place in so many ways. Understanding cultural, geological, and ecological changes over time really underlined for me how special this area is.” In recent years, Abbie has worked fervently within the farm-to-table movement, both on the farm and in the kitchen. Abbie is the Kitchen Gardener at Taliesin Preservation.
