Join us for the free and open-to-the-public opening ceremony of the Griot & Grey Owl Black Southern Writers Conference on Friday, November 1st, 2024, at Duke University’s Bryan Center. The theme for this year’s conference is “Home & Heritage”, and we are honored to feature acclaimed speakers Alexis Pauline Gumbs and Prentice Hemphill.The event begins at 2:00 PM with an introduction to the conference, followed by a powerful opening performance by the Charlotte Slam Team. Renowned author and scholar Alexis Pauline Gumbs will deliver an inspiring opening chant, setting the stage for a rich weekend of dialogue, creativity, and exploration of Black Southern narratives.
Following the opening, Prentice Hemphill, celebrated for their work in healing justice and community care, will deliver the keynote speech, offering reflections on the intersections of home, heritage, and personal resilience.
Before opening ceremony, Alexis Pauline Gumbs will offer a writing workshop, and afterwards there will be a Q&A and book signing.
Come be part of a transformative conversation that celebrates the power of storytelling, community, and the rich heritage of Black Southern writers.
