This hike is adapted for Los Angeles from a night program I used to teach kids in Yosemite National Park! Think of it like the sleep away summer camp program you wish you'd been able to do as a kid.
May and June is California pink glowworm season, the only west coast, bioluminescent firefly. I know exactly where to find them and will take you there!
We'll explore our local environment as the landscape shifts from day to sunset to night, learning about the ways in which both flora and fauna shift along with it. Learning about bats, night blooming flowers, owls, and other nocturnal creatures. Hiking through some of Griffith Park's primary bat and owl habitat, we'll also explore the ways in which our own eyes adjust (or don't) to darkness with a couple of fun games.
For this hike we avoid using headlamps or any other light source as much as possible to let our eyes adjust fully and let the moon show us the way.

Jason Wise (aka ) is a certified California naturalist, outdoor environmental educator, a native plant daddy, and pround tree hugger with a Master's in Environmental Policy. He teaches all ages about our inherent connections to nature, our regional urban ecology, and how we can all leave it better, including advocating to protect and respect our public lands.
