There is no better time to hangout in a cemetery than on Halloween! Join us at 10am on October 31st at the Greenwood Cemetery for our 3rd Annual Headstone Cleaning workshop! The historic Greenwood Cemetery dates all the way back to 1874 and was established to help serve the needs of the growing Black population of post-Civil War St. Louis and St. Louis County. Etta Daniels, the Historian for the Greenwood Cemetery Preservation Association, will join us to share some of the captivating history of the cemetery and to highlight some of the stories of the pioneers, visionaries, and everyday heroes who are laid to rest in this sacred ground. Be prepared to roll up your sleeves and participate in a hands-on workshop dedicated to the careful and respectful cleaning of headstones. SLPL Genealogy Librarian, Preston Petermeier will demonstrate proper cleaning techniques that will help preserve the integrity of these historical markers.
Since the program takes places outdoors at the cemetery, attendees should be sure to wear supportive and comfortable shoes as the ground could be unlevel and the weather could affect our footing. The library will provide the cleaning supplies.
