A transformative and thought-provoking day of Jungian and other ideas surrounding our relationship with nature and navigating growth through turbulent times. Perspectives on mental health, personal development and individual responsibility to help us deepen our connections with the natural environment in the face of climate change.

This in-person gathering will take place at Friends House in London, UK, in celebration of Earth Day 2024.

The day will consist of four talks by renowned authors and academics, and lively discussions on mythic imagination, dreams, the sacred landscape, and the sublime; examining the profound interplay between the physical and the imaginal.

Our keynote speaker, Dr. Sharon Blackie is a psychologist and mythologist, and the award-winning, bestselling writer of five books of fiction and nonfiction. Her work is focused on reimagining women’s stories, and on the relevance of myths, fairy tales, and folk traditions to the personal, cultural, and environmental problems we face today.

Dr. Dale Mathers is an Analytical psychologist. Trained in medicine at the Royal Free Hospital, and in psychiatry at St. George’s. Was a Mental Health Foundation research fellow, then ran the student counseling service at the London School of Economics. Retired from private practice, but still teaches and supervises regularly in Russia and Ukraine. Has written and edited five books on analytical psychology – the latest ‘Depth psychology and climate change’ (Routledge) gathers together insights from colleagues around the world on how to face into the inevitable climate change and manage its impact on the unconscious. His next book, Dreams: the basics’ will be published in 2024.

Caroline Hickman - Psychotherapist & Lecturer/Researcher. Caroline has a background in mental health social work and psychotherapy studying with ‘Revision’ & archetypal & cultural psychology with ‘Thiasos’ qualifying in 2000. Currently, a lecturer at the University of Bath researching children and young people’s emotional responses to the climate and biodiversity crisis internationally examining eco- anxiety & distress, eco-empathy, trauma, moral injury, the impact of climate anxiety on relationships and developing psycho-educational models. She is co-lead author on a 2021 global study of 10,000 children & young people’s emotions & thoughts about climate change published in The Lancet Planetary Health.

Dr Phil Goss is a Jungian Analyst (A.J.A. and I.A.A.P. member) and Reader and Director of Counselling and Psychotherapy, University of Warwick. He has a number of publications to his name including: Jung: The Complete Introduction (Hodder & Stoughton 2015) and Thresholds and Pathways between Jung and Lacan: The Blazing Sublime (Routledge, 2021) co-edited with Ann Casement and Dany Nobus. Phil has written about the feminine and masculine in a number of contexts including the natural world. He is currently working on a book applying Jungian inflected ideas to schooling and higher education.

As well as chairing, Dr Phil Goss will be co-presenting with Abbie-Eve Valentine.

Abbie is currently pursuing further studies at the University of Wales Trinity Saint David (UWTSD) with a focus on Ecology and Spirituality. She recently completed a Master of Science degree in Psychology and is engaged in identifying and refining her research interests for the forthcoming pursuit of a doctoral degree. Her research interests include Depth Psychology, Deep Ecology, Transcendentalism, and Nature Based Therapy.
