About this Event

Integral to almost every religion or belief from ancient times right up to the present day, the spiritual quest of pilgrimage has brought its community of followers together with the aim of strengthening one’s belief and/or the group's collective goals. How did this phenomenon spanning across civilizations get started, and what has allowed it to endure? It's time to uncover the stories, sacred spaces, and routes behind one of humanity's oldest and timeless traditions.

Join New York Adventure Club for a three-part series that delves into the rich tapestry of pilgrimage from the dawn of civilization to contemporary times. In Part Three: On the Road to Santiago, we'll see how the pilgrimage to the Tomb of St James changed dramatically starting from its origins in the 9th century through its heyday period in the Medieval Times and present day.

Led by archaeologist, heritage expert, and Egyptologist Stacey Anne Bagdi, this virtual journey will include:

  • The beginnings of the pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela and the foundations of St James’ tomb
  • Why Santiago flourished in the Medieval period according to first-hand accounts and itineraries, which put the pilgrimage destination on the map.
  • A look at some notable pilgrims to Santiago over time, and observe through their words what the pilgrimage meant for them
  • How one reaches Santiago from England and Europe, and what one does when they reach there including collecting stamps along the route and obtaining their Compostela
  • How the pilgrimage to Santiago evolved over time to become more of a spiritual/tourist route including inspiring films, television shows, and more
  • Why the pilgrimage to Santiago is still going strong today and how you, yourself can follow in those same medieval footprints to the tomb of St James

Afterward, we'll have a Q&A with Stacey — any and all questions are welcomed and encouraged!
