Frankly, I knew very little about Indonesia, and I feel as though I just discovered it. I was impressed with what I learned about this amazingly diverse archipelago of more than 18,000 islands that comprises the world's fourth most populous nation and the world's third largest democracy. The photo below is actually an artist's rendering of their new capital city, Nusantara that opened on 17 August at the cost of around $35 billion. Jakarta had been Indonesia's capital city since its founding, but the city, with its population of over 11 million - the most of any city in Indonesia, is located on the island of Java - the most populous island in Indonesia with over 141 million people or 56% of the country's total population. Given the confines of a heavily populated city on a heavily populated island, the decision was made to move their capital to the island of Borneo to the north. What further compounded this decision is the fact that Jakarta is the world's fastest-sinking megacity at the rate of 0.4 to 5.9 inches per year. The main reason for its sinking interestingly is not global climate change, but excessive water extraction in an effort to provide an adequate supply of water for its 11 million residents. Nusantara looks like a pretty cool, space-age city to me!
