Many people will remember the devastating effects of Dutch Elm Disease (DED), that first ravaged the UK treescape from the 1960s onwards, a pandemic that continues to this day. But most people don't know that much about the survivor trees, nor about all the work that has gone into creating DED resistant elm varieties.Last year, a book was published called Great British Elms, which signalled hope for the elm in the UK, and included a chapter about the now famous Chelsea Road elm, and its legacy of many new elms being planted in the Nether Edge area of Sheffield.
NESST has partnered with Sheffield and Rotherham Wildlife Trust to host a two-part Talk and Walk on this topic, including the book authors Mark Seddon and Sam Ford, and local elm lover Paul Selby.
We'll spend around an hour on the talk at the Broadfield Pub on Abbeydale Road, followed by questions. And then we'll take a relaxed short 1 mile walk on the flat, visiting some of the newly planted elms, ending up at the Chelsea Road elm.
