About this Event
Commissioned by Trinity for the United States’ 250th birthday, Great Awakenings: John Henry Hobart and America is a powerful new concert opera by acclaimed composer (and former Trinity organist) David Hurd. With a libretto by Christopher Dylan Herbert, a former member of the Trinity Choir, the work brings to life a pivotal era in American religious and civic history by celebrating the visionary leadership of Bishop Hobart (1775–1830), Trinity’s seventh rector (1816-1830).
Through its vibrant choral writing and expressive solos, Great Awakenings illuminates Hobart’s mission to expand The Episcopal Church, his embrace of education and inclusion, and his steadfast belief in pluralism and democracy as cornerstones of the American spirit. Great Awakenings will be performed with Trinity Choir, Downtown Voices and NOVUS. NOVUS will also present an unconducted performance of Aaron Copland’s Appalachian Spring Suite for 13 instruments, the Pulitzer Prize-winning work originally commissioned as a ballet for Martha Graham’s dance company. Melissa Attebury, conductor .
