Cue the joyfulness and nostalgia of The Nutcracker - but this year, with a feel-good element.
Enter the Ukrainian Grand Kyiv Ballet – founded by principal dancers, Kateryna Kukhar and Alex Stoianov, who undertook extraordinary efforts to evacuate their two children AND their fellow ballet dancers safely from Ukraine to America upon Russia’s invasion.
It’s been three and a half years since their school - the Kyiv State Choreographic College in Kyiv, Ukraine - was damaged due to the conflict. Some students were killed, and others who have not returned home since. Now, the 35 professional dancers will be bringing the national tour of The Nutcracker back to Brooklyn for one night only to help rebuild the school and show audiences the hope and healing power they all found through dance.
