About this Event

Gramercy Book Club’s August selection is , a brilliantly imagined coming-of-age story from acclaimed Nobel Prize winner , where she creates inhabitants of a fully realized Black world. This book club program is the final of the series of Morrison’s novels that Gramercy Books will be exploring in 2026 in partnership with Ohioana Library as part of a statewide initiative celebrating Morrison’s indelible impact. Ohio State University History professor and scholar will facilitate the group discussion.

A ticket to this program includes a copy of SONG OF SOLOMON. It is strongly encouraged that registrants read the book prior to the program.

OHIOANA LIBRARY and the OHIO STATE UNIVERSITY DEPARTMENT OF HISTORY are Gramercy’s Community Partners for this program.

Toni Morrison was the author of eleven novels, from The Bluest Eye (1970) to God Help the Child (2015). She received the National Book Critics Circle Award, the Pulitzer Prize, and in 1993 she was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature. She died in 2019.

Hasan Jeffries is associate professor of history at The Ohio State University where he teaches, researches, and writes about the African American experience. He is the author of Bloody Lowndes: Civil Rights and Black Power in Alabama’s Black Belt and is the editor of Understanding and Teaching the Civil Rights Movement, a collection of essays by leading civil rights scholars on how to teach the Civil Rights Movement. Jeffries wrote and narrated the 10-episode Audible Original series Great Figures of the Civil Rights Movement. He has also worked on several public history projects, including serving as the lead historian for the $27 million renovation of the National Civil Rights Museum at the Lorraine Hotel in Memphis, Tennessee, site of the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Dr. Jeffries hosts the podcast Teaching Hard History. He earned his BA in history from Morehouse College and his PhD in American history with a specialization in African American history from Duke University.
