About the Department of Computer Science at the University of Toronto
Established in 1964, the Department of Computer Science in the Faculty of Arts and Science is a tech innovation powerhouse and consistently ranks among the world’s top computer science departments according to QS World, Times Higher Education and Shanghai Ranking’s Global Ranking of Academic Subjects.
We provide diverse programs and research opportunities while consistently producing high-impact research that is driving the future of technology in Canada.
Our esteemed faculty are world leaders, boasting accolades such as two Turing Awards, along with many other national and international honours.
Since 1964, our researchers' work has had a major impact on the field:
- Genesys, developed in 1967-9, one of the earliest interactive computer animation systems.
- Expanding on Turing’s concept of computability – what a computer can and cannot solve – to include efficiency.
- Early work in the 1980s on touch-screen tablets, well before the technology was commercially viable.
- Leading the state-of-the-art in machine learning and neural networks.
The Department of Computer Science is located in four buildings on the main St. George Campus - Bahen Centre for Information Technology (40 St. George Street), the Sandford Fleming Building (10 King’s College Road), the D.L.
