About this Event

Have you ever wondered if you might be missing out on literary brilliance? Has any author unjustly slipped through the cracks of publishing? Is there anyone out there who's talking about this?Welcome to Waterstones Gower Street's Forgotten Fiction Book Club - the book club that might just answer these questions for you.The Forgotten Fiction Book Club aims to rediscover great writers who have been unjustly neglected or have fallen out of print. Each month, we will be reading books from a plethora of genres including Science Fiction, Literary Fiction, Crime and much more! This month, we will be discussing arguably the first of the 'angry young men', John Wain. Best known for his novel Hurry On Down, Wain's contemporaries included Kingsley Amis, Philip Larkin and Thom Gunn, but Wain has slipped from the public mind in recent decades. Has this been a miscarriage of literary justice to forget about him so soon?'The idea of being forgotten is terrifying. I fear not just that I, personally, will be forgotten but that we are all doomed to being forgotten...Writing a book is an act of sheer defiance. It is a declaration that you believe in the persistence of memory.' - Susan OrleanWhat could be more fun than sipping wine and discussing a great read?Tickets cost £5 and include a drink. The following month's pick will be available for £5 at our secondhand department.Book early to avoid disappointment, spaces are limited!
