All are welcome for a deeply moving Tenebrae worship experience at Good Shepherd on Friday, April 3 at 7pm.Tenebrae, Latin for “shadow” or “darkness”, dates back to the 4th century. This worship service begins with a procession of candles and the entrance of the Light of the Christ. The passion of Jesus is then boldly proclaimed by multiple voices. At 12 significant parts of the story, all sing a recurring musical refrain and a candle is extinguished. Gradually, all 12 candles are extinguished. The sanctuary is now in darkness. Three loud hammering sounds punctuate the silence. Then the final reader says “He breathed his last breath.” A lone cello offers a mournful, sorrowful, heart-wrenching piece. Moving and meaningful. All depart in silence … feeling as if the story is unfinished … because it is … until Easter Day.
