You're invited to the opening of the 'Goldfields First Nations and Afghan Cameleers' exhibition. The exhibition will be open from Monday 11 till Friday 15 May 2026 as part of The Australian Heritage Festival.
The event and exhibition will be held in the historic Kanowna Hall in the Loopline precinct. Entry through the Goldfields Aboriginal Language Centre in the Boulder Railway Station building.
The story of the Afghan cameleers of the Goldfields region of WA is an interesting one! The Afghans were instrumental in bringing water and supplies to the region, but they, like Aboriginal people, were treated as second class citizens.
This interpretive exhibition brings out the story of the cameleer and the connections that developed between them and Aboriginal people. People brought together through hardship and resilience.
Today, in Kalgoorlie, can be found many remnants of the cameleers in the architecture, date palms, and carob trees dotted through the town. Descendents of the cameleers are found in many Aboriginal communities. The exhibition celebrates this heritage.
You are invited to the opening event on Monday 11 May, or to view the static interpretive exhibition in the historic Kanowana Hall between 8.30 and 4.30pm till Friday 15 May 2026. Free.
Come and read stories of Goldfields First Nations peoples and contemplate this period in time.
