Despite an expanding treatment landscape, many patients with type 2 diabetes (T2D) continue to experience suboptimal glycemic control, underscoring the need for improved insulin-based management strategies. Emerging once-weekly basal insulin formulations may address key limitations of once-daily analogues by simplifying regimens and improving Medic*tion adherence. Primary care practitioners (PCPs), who are often responsible for managing T2D, play a critical role in initiating, titrating, and adjusting insulin therapy alongside other antidiabetic agents. However, practical education on evolving insulin formulations and their real-world implementation remains limited in primary care training. This case-based educational initiative aims to address these gaps by preparing PCPs for the potential role of once-weekly basal insulin formulations while reinforcing core principles of insulin management in T2D. Delivered through an interactive game -show format, learners will compete in team-based treatment decision challenges supported by expert faculty discussion and evidence-based guidance.
Target Audience
This initiative is intended for primary care, family medicine, and internal medicine physicians; nurse practitioners; physician assistants; and other general practice providers.
Learning Objectives
After participating in this initiative, learners will be able to:
1. Assess the efficacy and safety of emerging once-weekly basal insulin therapies in T2D, considering insulin-naive and insulin-experienced patients
2. Develop strategies that support guideline-based early identification of individuals with T2D who would benefit from basal insulin therapy
3. Identify contributors to insulin therapeutic inertia and nonadherence that may be addressed with once-weekly basal formulas
4. Review education and communication strategies and resources that address patients’ educational needs surrounding growing treatments for T2D
