Join director Jason Karman and writer Gorrman Lee for a screening of their coming-of-age queer feature film Golden Delicious, winner of 14 awards from its tour of 57 film festivals, including Outstanding Feature Film, Outstanding Director, and Outstanding Writer from the 2022 Reelworld Film Festival. This feature debut from the local filmmakers is a coming-of-age drama set in the digital age, told from the perspective of a third-generation Chinese-Canadian. Everyone wants something from high-school senior Jake: his father is pushing him to try out for the basketball team — an abandoned dream of his own — and his girlfriend wants to take their relationship to the next level. But it’s not until Aleks, an openly gay teen with a love for basketball, moves in across the street that Jake begins to struggle with his own desires.
After the screening, Jason and Gorrman will join Brandon Yan, the outgoing Executive Director of Out On Screen, in a discussion around their creative visions and their processes and invite all to participate in an open Q & A session.

He is currently developing TV projects with Reality Distortion Field, and Brightlight Pictures. Brandon Yan (甄念本) (he/him) is the outgoing Executive Director of Out On Screen which produces the Vancouver Queer Film Festival and Out In Schools program. He has collaborated with the Ministry of Education, BC Teachers’ Federation, UBC Faculty of Education, and the ARC Foundation to address the needs of 2SLGBTQIA+ youth through policies and practices that foster inclusive and more supportive school environments. Growing up as a mixed-race queer kid in Langley, he never saw role models who looked like him on TV or in film, and if he did they were never queer. If they were queer, they were never Asian. Brandon understands that representation of diverse and complex intersecting identities is important, and it is this conviction and his experience as an activist, advocate, and educator that led him to run for Vancouver city council in 2018. Though he didn’t win, it brought forward important conversations on representation, race, sexuality, and politics.
